Nails
From the report to Frame:
With 14 participants from European and South East Asian countries the PALA project, which was curated by Melati Suryodarmo and Boris Nieslony, had in principle all the
possibilities for a fruitful exchange of thoughts and attitude about creative actions in the field of performance art. The diversity of cultural backgrounds was very helpful in this process, the diversity in art approaches was a challenge, but the diversity in experience was too much to handle with. This led automatically towards a group
forming that was contra-productive to the project. The facilitators could have done a better job here.
Still, it was a powerful meeting of likewise artists, willing to share the deeper thoughts about their art practice. It is still open how future cooperations will evolve out of this project. The basis of mutual respect and insight in the different approaches has certainly been established.
I liked very much the concept of PALA, so much that I can imagine to organize a likewise event in some future. Knowing the pitfalls of such an endeavour will be a great advantage.
The performance festival "Undisclosed Territories #3" in Solo was a very special event taking place in a park like venue with ca. 100 visitors from Solo and Yogyakarta. Performance art in Java seems to be pretty popular, with a lot of active artists and a very curious audience.
I presented a new work called "Nails" which was partly an interaction with the audience. I was pleased with the way it was received. The language of performance art seems to have no borders nor boundaries.
Performed in April 2009, Solo, Indonesia
